We have two new biomes based on the classic Castlevania levels. ![]() We have three new bosses, one of them being an incredible showdown that we won’t talk yet, but that is super exciting and something never seen before in the game. Laulan: We had a lot of Castlevania weapons in Dead Cells… already an homage for us, but now we had to think again okay, this weapon is already in the game.ĭupré: Yeah, the Vampire Killer at the time was called Valmont's whip instead of Belmont's whip. We tried to translate it into Dead Cells’ fast-paced gameplay. We have 14 new weapons like Alucard’s sword, Alucard’s shield, the old classic cross.īérenger Dupré: Pretty much every weapon from Castlevania that we hadn't copied before. Since this is a roguelite, we tried to find a way to make it interesting to new players and newcomers to be introduced to this world and the new items and stuff. So, you will see Richter Belmont, Alucard, Dracula, Maria Renard, and many others that will guide you through this new storyline to basically discover the content that we included. You get this new storyline, including all of the usual suspects of the Castlevania series. It's basically twice as big as we previously released. That's something we always say, but it really is. Game Informer: Just as a brief overview, what can we expect from this Castlevania DLC?īenjamin Laulan: Well, it's our biggest DLC yet. ![]() Game Informer got the chance to speak with Evil Empire’s co-founder Benjamin Laulan and brand manager Bérenger Dupré to talk about the DLC, what we can expect from it, and what it was like working with such a beloved franchise. While Dead Cells was developed by Motion twin, the Castlevania DLC is being developed by Evil Empire, an indie studio made of ex-Motion Twin employees that have handled most of the game’s post-launch content. To take such a big leap – and to do it with the series that inspired the game in the first place – is a huge step for the indie roguelike. It came as a total surprise Castlevania hasn’t had a new release in years, and most of Dead Cells’ other collaborations never amounted to much more than referential skins and a few weapons. Hosted by 44 Bytes.During the 2022 Game Awards, the team behind Dead Cells put out an animated teaser trailer announcing that the game’s next DLC expansion would be Castlevania-themed. © 2023 Hookshot Media, partner of ReedPop. Parrying your attacks, sending your projectiles back at you, slicing your own grenades in two and killing your beloved pets are just some of the challenges players will face, and we haven’t even gotten to the part where she slices the whole screen into pieces. The Queen adapts by changing her tactics depending on the players’ combat strategy. ![]() And because we can’t introduce new Biomes without also introducing a powerful new Boss waiting for you, please meet The Queen, an all-new and unexpectedly elegant character unlike any other boss seen before in the game. Players will find themselves in a soaring tower in which players will scramble upward as fast as they can to outrun rising flames while simultaneously fending off highly skilled warriors who want nothing more than to end your run. The second Biome, The Lighthouse, showcases a brand new challenge of vertical exploration not yet seen in Dead Cells. The first Biome, The Infested Shipwreck, winds you through a rotten shipwreck where you will be hunted by unforgiving eldritch horrors lurking (like they do) in the spooky and haunted old vessel. The run is parallel to the High Peak Castle and Throne Room levels, introducing players to a variety of new challenges. The Queen & The Sea DLC takes players through two brand new Biomes: The Infested Shipwreck and The Lighthouse. The Queen and the Sea DLC finishes the path that started with The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls, in which after dying all over again trying to save the island from the Malaise, the Beheaded is now seeking for a way out of the island - a way out which he seems to have found in the last DLC, but it's heavily guarded.
